The atmosphere of ancient lands producing wines of excellence

Italy, Basilicata

Interview

ItalfoodOst vs Alovini

How much does the territory influence your production?

Basilicata is an ancient land: the writings of the Greeks and Romans celebrate, from time immemorial, the presence of the vine and the excellent quality of the wines obtained from it.

Our company produces its wines in the territory of Vulture, in extensive vineyards on hills of volcanic origin at 500 meters above sea level, where the Aglianico vine has grown since ancient times. The resulting wine, thanks to a soil rich in ash, lapilli and lava rocks, the sea breeze and the sun of the south, which has amazing characteristics making it a product of excellence.

Why did Oronzo Alò, the founder, move from Puglia to here?

In the late 80s, Alò, a winemaker from Salento, moved here to initiate a collaboration with important wineries, in this beautiful corner of the world where olive trees, chestnut trees and vineyards surround the picturesque volcanic lakes of Monticchio. Along with the traditions and the age-old passion of the winemakers of Lucania, Alovini brought innovative winemaking processes, methods of an oenological art whose sole purpose is the production of excellent wines. The first technologically advanced and thermo-conditioned cellar was founded in 2003.

Today, the production system and territory has grown, enhancing even further the products produced.

What are the wines produced in this area?

Aglianico del Vulture DOC is one of the oenological glories of southern Italy, one of the finest wines produced by the indigenous vine, which sweetens with age, its full-bodied, mineral, dry and structured flavour with a slightly astringent aftertaste resulting in a splendid harmonious wine.

Along with this "king", we cultivate other red grape vines, such as Primitivo, and international vines such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

We also produce here some of the most original and long-lived wines of Europe: the white Fiano and Greco di Tufo.
