ItalfoodOst vs Cantine Belisario

Two words to tell us about your company?

Belisario was born in 1971 and in 2021 it completed 50 harvests. Today it has 300 hectares of vineyards: about 100 are directly owned while the remaining part, as we are a cooperative winery, is committed to 150 members who manage the vineyard following the agronomic and viticultural directives of Belisario. This is because each label for us is the result of a precise wine project that starts with the planting of the vineyard. We are the largest producers of Verdicchio di Matelica DOC with over 70% of the total production.

All our vineyards are located in the area near the winery and are all in the upper Esina Valley, a particular territory that strongly characterizes our wines.

How does it characterize them?

It is the only valley in the Marche region to be arranged north-south, parallel to the Adriatic Sea and thus closed to the mitigating thermal effects of the sea. The consequence is a "mixed" climate: continental in the strong temperature variations but Mediterranean in the sunshine of the 43rd parallel. Verdicchio's vine reads this environmental situation by modifying its metabolism.

The obvious consequence is a drop in bunches and a must richer in organic acids and therefore a more mineral wine, more inclined to tertiarization and therefore to aging, a point reserved for very few white wines in the world.

What about your production?

As each of our wines is a wine project, each label has its own vineyards and a dedicated winemaking method: from the vinification in reduction of Vignati Del Cerro with carbon dioxide snow to the cryomaceration of Cambrugiano, up to the vinification without the use of sulphites and copper in our organic vineyards and the grape washing with ozonated water for Vigneti B and Animologico, up to the long aging on fine lees of Meridia. And then the sparkling winemaking with the Charmat Lungo method and the Classic method, and more.

We have 50 harvests of history in a territory that has known viticulture and enology for 2800 years: nothing could be more beautiful when history is guided by knowledge.
