The enhancement of the territory and the vitiviniculture of the Castelli Romani

Italy, Lazio

Interview

ItalfoodOst vs Gotto d Oro

Who is Gotto d’Oro?

We are one of the biggest cooperatives in Lazio. Our story begins in 1945, at the end of the Second World War, from the desire to band together of the local farmers who initially used the facilities of the former National Cooperative Cellar for the vinification of their grapes. Marketing of the first packaged wines on the national territory started in 1947. We have grown a lot since then and with us also the enhancement and presence of Roman wines in Italy and across the border. In 1989 the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry declared Gotto d'Oro "cooperative society of national interest".

What about Gotto d’oro today?

We are a dynamic and modern reality but still deeply anchored to the tradition that binds us to the territory of the Castelli Romani and its history. Following this objective, we have developed the brand-new Linea Settantacinque75, to commemorate the historicity of the company but also, thanks to a new, innovative and sophisticated look, to aim at the future.

Which vine varieties do you grow for your wines?

In this territory, many vines, including international ones, have taken root over time, finding an ideal habitat here. White grapes certainly prevail, to name a few: Malvasia di Candia, Trebbiano Toscano, the native Bombino and Greco; the semi-native Malvasia del Lazio and Bellone; the international Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Viognier.

Instead, the most cultivated red grape varieties are Sangiovese, Montepulciano, the native Cesanese and the international Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, which we use for making quality red wines.
