The excellence of Irpinia wines

Italy, Campania

Interview

ItalfoodOst vs Terredora di Paolo

Tell us something about Cantina Terradora…

Today the winery Terradora di Paolo, with its 180 hectares of vineyards, is one of the most important and prestigious wineries in Campania and southern Italy, that rediscovered and restored the ancient, native grape varieties such as Greco, Fiano and Aglianico.

What about Irpinia? And where’s the winery precisely?

Irpinia is a hilly area, mountainous in the inland, characterized by a continental microclimate, cradle of wines since the Greeks and Romans era. The predominant colour is the green of a lush nature, whose mountains are covered with chestnut and beech forests.

The winery is located on the hills of Serra di Montefusco, in the province of Avellino at 650 mt above sea level. The vineyards are grown in those Irpinian areas whose terroir is perfect for the production of excellent wines, made from ancient, native grape varieties: Aglianico, Fiano, Greco and Falanghina.

In such a context, which wines do you produce?

The vineyards are located in premium estates, each one with a specific production.

In the Lapio Estate, located in the production area of both Fiano di Avellino and Taurasi, we grow Fiano and Aglianico to make both Riserve Campo Re and two other important wines: Taurasi Fatica Contadina and Fiano di Avellino Ex Cinere Resurgo.

Greco di Tufo is produced in the Terre degli Angeli estate and in the Montefusco vineyards. Also in Montefusco are the vineyards for Falanghina, while in Montemiletto Aglianico and Falanghina are grown. The Gesualdo estate, the latest acquisition, is located on a plateau at around 600m above sea level and is dedicated to the production of Aglianico, Coda di Volpe and Falanghina. Finally, in the Pietradefusi estate, a unique land for Aglianico, we select the special grapes for the production of Taurasi Pago dei Fusi.
